The Role of Government

government

Government is a group of people who make the rules for a region, a country, a state within a country or even a city. Governments also collect taxes, print money and use force to keep people safe. Governments have a system of justice that lists the things that are against the law and describes the punishments for breaking those laws. Governments are made up of three main parts, the legislative, executive and judicial branches.

Governments provide services to citizens and they also set standards that help society work together. The services they provide vary from country to country but some examples include: social programs that help people in need, military protection and a national infrastructure that provides transportation, communication, energy and utilities.

In general, governments have a tough job because they are constantly trying to balance the needs of individual rights and freedoms with the needs of the community as a whole. Governments can be a powerful force for good or they can be a source of great harm and oppression. Throughout history, the human race has experimented with many different types of government. We have experienced imperial monarchies, dictatorships, two world wars and the rise – and fall – of communism. We have found that no political system has yet been able to perfectly strike a balance between these competing concerns.

Today, most people live in countries with some form of government that they recognize as their own. They may not like all the ways that their government functions but they know that their country’s leaders are accountable to them and they can hold them responsible for the decisions they make. The main types of modern political systems are democracies, totalitarian regimes and authoritarian regimes and there are many different forms of hybrid systems as well.

While the basic role of a government will always be to make and enforce laws, they are also becoming increasingly involved in managing externalities and driving economic growth as well as overseeing federal budgets and regulating taxes. The debate over the right size of government to accomplish these tasks is ongoing and will likely continue for some time to come.

In the United States, we have a federal government, a state government and a local city government. The President is the head of state and he leads the executive branch. Congress is the legislative branch and it makes the laws for the entire country. The executive branch makes sure everyone follows the laws that Congress passes and it represents the United States in international affairs. The judicial branch of the government hears and decides legal cases. This is one of the most important functions of any government because it protects individual rights and ensures that people are treated fairly. Governments can be a wonderful thing for our society but they must never become a source of oppression. The best way to avoid this is to stay informed and involved. We must vote and speak out if we feel that our government is not doing what it should be.
